Update: More Funds Needed for Hepatitis B Vaccination Programme in India

Health Screening for new monks and nuns of Namdroling Monastery

Thank you for all the support received to the fund appeal for Namdroling Monastery’s Hepatitis B Vaccination Programme. Nearly £7,000 has been raised, but the appeal is still vastly short of the target, with over £23,000 still needed to save lives by making this Vaccination Programme possible.

Hepatitis B is a highly infectious inflammatory disease of the liver. Symptoms of mild fever, nausea/vomiting, diarrhoea and abdominal pain typically last for six months, but in chronic cases carriers have progressive liver disease which can cause cirrhosis and cancers of the liver. India is home to an estimated 36 million chronic cases, 11% of the world’s total and has between 100 000 and 200 000 deaths from hepatocellular carcinoma or cirrhosis each year. Unlike the developed world, where transmission is often associated with unsafe sex and injected drug use, in India the infection spreads through crowded living conditions and poor hygiene, contaminated blood transfusions, medical and dental treatments, and the sharing of toothbrushes, razors and even towels. Hepatitis B is 50 – 100 times more infectious that HIV. It is a major public health problem in India, so it is important that we support this vaccination programme. Where the hepatitis B vaccination is administered, cases of the disease are reduced by more than 95%.

New monk at Namdroling Monastery receiving Typhoid VaccinationThe planned Vaccination Programme, requested by Hospital Administrators at Tsepal Tobkyed Hospital, will protect over 4000 monks and nuns at Namdroling Monastery in India. The cost of the programme is estimated to be just over 3 million Indian Rupees which is about £30,000. Of this, nearly £7,000 has already been raised through the generous support of students and friends of Pathgate Institute, but over £23,000 is still needed to buy the vaccines that will protect the lives of over 4000 monks and nuns at Namdroling Monastery.

If you would like play an active part in supporting this Vaccination Programme, please send a payment through Paypal or by transfer to the Pathgate bank account. Please click on ‘Make a Donation’ to donate funds.

Important Announcement of Long Life Offering for Yangsi Rinpoche

Announcement of Grand Tenshug (Long-Life Offering)The administrators at Namdroling Monastery in India have made a formal request to students of the worldwide Palyul community to support a Grand Tenshug (long life offering) during this summer’s enthronement of the Yangsi (reincarnation) of our guru, His Holiness Pema Norbu Rinpoche. The message of the formal announcement is as follows:

On the fourth day of the sixth Tibetan month (31 July 2014), the Yangsi (reincarnation) of our beloved guru, His Holiness Pema Norbu Rinpoche, will be enthroned with an auspicious grand ceremony at the Palyul Monastery in Tibet.

The great kindness that springs from His Holiness’s vast compassion cannot be repaid even if we were to fill the entire three thousandfold world system with gold. However, in order to gather the two accumulations and also as an auspicious circumstance for our Yangsi Rinpoche’s precious life to remain firm for a hundred kalpas for the benefit of all sentient beings and the teachings, as well as to ensure that all his noble aspirations will be fulfilled without any hindrance, and specifically, since the enthronement ceremony will be the first enlightened activity of Yangsi Rinpoche, it is the utmost responsibility of all the students of His Holiness Pema Norbu Rinpoche to make a Grand Tenshug (long life offering) with great joy, faith, and enthusiasm as this will open up the door to unlimited opportunities of auspiciousness for all.

We would like to call upon students of Pathgate Institute who wish to support this, to make contributions through our Pathgate account so we will be able to offer a combined offering on behalf of all the friends and students of Pathgate Institute. To contribute to this Tenshug Offering, please go to Make a donation.

Lasting, Stable Happiness – Part 1

In this world of ours, we all have certain wants and needs from the basic needs for food, clothing and shelter to the wish for long life, health, wealth, romance and happiness. But of all these needs, the more you want the more turmoil you experience. We cannot find lasting happiness by constantly striving to satisfy these desires.

In the Audio Teaching ‘Stable, Lasting Happiness – Part 1’, Ven. Lama Dondrup Dorje explains that lasting happiness comes from the contentment of not getting excessive in our grasping for needs. Once we have indulgence in excess there is always something we find uncomfortable, so to have a happy life is to be flexible, to have less indulgence and to recognise the nature of impermanence of all things. Recognise that the conditions of the world are constantly changing, but the only thing that really stays the same is our original nature; and with that you are able to come to the state of realisation of how to be able to depart from the conditions of the world, which means you can live in the world but not be hampered by the conditions of the world. While you live in the world, there is no need to complain about it, no need to get unhappy about it, but also no need to be hindered by it.

When you realise that this body we have will not always be the same, you can grow old graciously, accepting what happens and not pretending to be something you are not. Recognising the impermanence of this life, make use of your time, appreciating what you have and appreciating the nature of impermanence. In this way even if you only live for one day, you have a good life.

New Edition of 'The Life of Guru Rinpoche' Film

Guru Rinpoche departing for the Land of the cannibals‘The Life of Guru Rinpoche’ is a 10 hour Tibetan language film in 15 chapters produced under the direction of the late Holiness Penor Rinpoche. It was the wish of HH Penor Rinpoche that the film script be translated into English and the completion of this project was entrusted to Ven. Lama Dondrup Dorje. Having spent several years working closely with members of the Nyingma University at Namdroling Monastery, the script has been translated into English and English subtitles to accompany the film are finally ready. The film has been re-mastered into high definition with brand new CGI (Computer Generated Imagery) special effects to replace some of the original set pieces so that the film can offer enhanced enjoyment for the viewers.

A trailer for the film has been released, and the first chapter of the re-mastered film is scheduled to be released in the summer, showing the passing into parinirvana of Shakyamuni Buddha and Chenrezig bringing the light of blessing to the country of Tibet. To view the trailer of the new edition of ‘The Life of Guru Rinpoche’, please click here, or visit our Dharma Theatre.
