Reflection On Being A Student
Of Lama Dondrup Dorje

“The first time I witnessed Sifu Yeung demonstrating martial arts, I was simply amazed by his skilful display of energy that was nothing like the image- orientated Kung Fu of the movies. Still more memorable was Sifu's attitude: I can only describe it as an overwhelming positivity of energy. All my preconceptions about martial arts were shattered that night. Once I began the Classical Qigong Study with Sifu Yeung, the same could be said about my views on life. Sifu has always made it clear that his role as a teacher is to point out our mistakes. He is quick to discipline and quick to laugh: everything in its proper place, everything at its proper time. There is not one encounter that I have had with Sifu that has not revealed something new to me, inspired me and pointed me in the right direction. There is not one aspect of life, for all of its complexity that is not covered by Sifu's teachings. Sifu uses martial arts as a physical discipline, not for competition or self-image but as a skilful means to stabilise the mind through stabilising the body. It does not take long to appreciate the wealth of knowledge and experience that Sifu possesses: while a Grandmaster of Chinese martial arts, Sifu's spiritual teaching is also fully endorsed by his Root Guru, His Holiness Penor Rinpoche, the retired head of the Nyingma lineage of Tibetan Buddhism. The methods that Sifu teaches have been proven over many, many generations and Sifu is a living testament to their power and truth. In all matters, Sifu addresses each moment with freshness, vitality and, above all, humility. Sifu has described what he teaches as "the action of sincerity and consistency". It is Sifu's complete embodiment of these values that reveal him to be a truly extraordinary teacher and an object of supreme trust amongst his students. The effect of his conduct is plainly revealed not only in the faces of his students, but also in the eyes of everyone whom he encounters, of all ages and nationalities. It is a sparkle of happiness, recognition, understanding and peace.”
