Reflection On Being A Student
Of Lama Dondrup Dorje

“Before becoming a student of Sifu Yeung, my life was very mixed up with no real direction. Like most people I was always looking for happiness and satisfaction in all the wrong things: intellectualisation, wit and sarcasm, acts of pride to enhance the ego, self aggrandisement, judging, criticising and scrutinising of others which gives a sense of superiority, sense-gratification and often using force to dominate situations to impose the outcome that would suit me best. All of which did not deliver what I wish for, finding only temporary highs with the following lows. Since being fortunate enough to be under Sifu's guidance I have slowly become aware of these things I have been partaking in, and although not easy, to honestly admit to one self and take responsibility for, I am nonetheless gradually facing these long hidden and well guarded faults. Through Sifu's compassion and clear understanding of cause and effect he knows exactly what is needed to bring about harmony and contentment for the student at each stage of life, helping us overcome problems and difficulties as they arise. Sifu can be likened this way to a Doctor who understands the ailment, knowing the correct prescription and course of treatment to relieve our pain and bring us back to optimum health. My experience of the validity of Sifu's instruction is that it never fails those that follow it sincerely. And it is obvious to me that any moments of trouble and stress as a student are purely due to my lack of reliance on the guidance of Sifu. Benefits I have found from being Sifu's student over the past few years are many, one very important one being improvement in relationships with others. Sifu's guidance is enabling me to reduce pride in myself and therefore be able to genuinely see the good in those around me. Specifically my relationship with my father has changed completely since being around Sifu. Before my father and I had a very strained and difficult relationship, I would find it very difficult to see the good in him and could not accept things that had previously happened between us. Now when I think of my father, I can sincerely and honestly say they are thoughts of admiration, respect, love and gratitude. I can see just how kind both my parents have been and how much difficulty and suffering they have gone through for me. This has only come about since meeting Sifu. I can see the long term benefit of following Sifu's teaching is that of reducing and eventually dissolving all sufferings and anxieties in our lives, with an increase in harmony and an abundance of happiness and contentment; enabling one to share this with others in our every day lives, just as Sifu does with all that he meets.”
