Reflection On Being A Student
Of Lama Dondrup Dorje

“I met Sifu Yeung through attending the Qigong and Taiji classes in Newcastle. I found the practice helped me stabilize my mind in the busy world of work and family. When the Course for Classical Qigong Study started, I enrolled and have had the good fortune to be a student of Sifu since then. Although I fall a long way short of being a good student I am continually inspired by Sifu to do better, a recurring theme of Sifu's teaching. He encourages us always to find ways to improve whatever we are doing by attending to details with enthusiastic effort. This has greatly helped me to maintain a more positive and optimistic outlook on life. Sifu teaches us to ground our energy to stabilize our mind so we can see things more clearly. I have found this very helpful in everyday life. I used to get impatient while getting on with daily chores. Now I regard it as a great opportunity to practice patience and mindfulness. Since I first met Sifu he has always taught the importance of reverence, humility and gratitude. Sifu shows us that the way forward is through paying attention to what is really happening and that we should aspire to maintain a humble mind so we can begin to truly learn. That we should be grateful for all life's experiences and celebrate each day, each moment as new, and contemplate on them to find our shortcomings so that we can improve ourselves. Sifu helps us to stop rushing through life and instead examine the details of what we are doing. Now when I carry out a simple task such as caring for house plants, I am beginning to see for the first time how the leaves grow, the structure of the plant and its specific needs. Before I met Sifu I was drifting in total ignorance and with no purpose, no aspiration. By his example Sifu shows us what can be achieved and how to make it happen. To follow Sifu's teaching, in my experience, is to be on the right path. To be a Pathgate Student is to be part of a supportive and happy family with Sifu the teacher father, on whom you can rely totally. Sifu's generosity is boundless. He will always ensure you have what you need. His constant example of putting others first is inspirational and motivates me to be the same. I am continually grateful to have the amazing good fortune to find such a rare and precious teacher and the opportunity to begin true learning and real living.”
